Oldies But Goodies!

"Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable. They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well."
--Bonnie Wilcox 'Old Dogs, Old Friends'

Meet our oldies but goodies-Jimmy, Flo and Lucy! At Boston Dog Rescue, we are committed towards saving as many lives as we can, especially the lives of senior dogs. Jimmy, Flo and Lucy all have different stories on how they came to our rescue but they are each so special, loving and deserving of a forever home.

While its heart wrenching to see dogs in shelter kennels, just waiting for someone to give them a second chance at life, it's even far more painful to see an elderly dog sitting quietly in a shelter. Elderly dogs know that they are homeless and they often watch as puppy after puppy is adopted while no one gives them a second look. It's true, even devoted dog lovers don't often want to adopt an elderly dog for fear that their time with them will be limited. However, remember that there are never any guarantees about length of life with any dog. Quality of time together can matter a great deal more than quantity. By adopting an older dog, we can make a statement about compassion and the value of all life at all ages.

Why Adopt An Older Dog?

Do you have room in your home and heart for an older dog, consider the following reasons why adopting an older dog is a very good idea:

  1. Older dogs, especially those that come to us, settle in easily and are more than ready and willing to bond with you and your family.

  2. An older dog probably won't need a great deal of exercise, and will really appreciate quality time with you and a good nap. And of course, your socks will remain in tact.

  3. Older dogs generally like to watch the same programs on TV that you do, so you won't have to learn to enjoy cartoons.

  4. Older dogs have figured out what humans are all about and are willing and eager to add new information to their knowledge of human behavior. Old dogs can absolutely learn new tricks!

  5. Older dogs are very grateful for the second chance they've been given and are very good at giving and receiving love.

Looking for a wonderful, loving, responsible dog lover to watch your dog while you are away... well look no further

And here's an update from one of BDR's success stories!

Dear Boston Dog Rescue,

We hope you're doing well. Since today is Zoey's first birthday (at least, according to her papers!), we wanted to send you along some pictures and news on our favorite girl.

Please feel free to share these pics and this email with all the amazing volunteers that helped Zoey get to us this winter and spring. We are both so grateful for all your work, and we're very reflective of that today.

We think Zoey is basically fully-grown now - she weighs around 32 pounds, and she's quickly turning from an uncoordinated, floppy puppy into an athletic, graceful, beautiful grown up dog. She's getting really good at playing fetch, and she loves to play tug of war with her (seemingly hundreds of) toys. She still has the black and white cat stuffed animal that she came to us with, and the pink fleecy blanket - she loves them both!

Zoey loves people and other dogs (she's not too fond of cats, but she's a dog, so that's ok) - she stops and says hello to everything with a pulse on the street when we walk her. There's a puppy down the block that Zoey loves more than anything else, and vice versa - there are always joyous greetings whenever those two run into each other!

I never thought I'd say this, but one of my favorite things to do is wake up early in the morning to take Zoey for a walk - she is my living alarm clock, as she will get out of her crate and stare at me from two inches away to wake me up, every morning. It's a great way to start the day, and it gives us some quality time together before the day gets hectic. Zoey spends most of her day outside with a dog group - they run around in dog parks and take other field trips while Amanda and I are stuck at work. Lucky dog! We usually take her to the dog park on weekends, and she loves playing around with the big dogs - labs are her favorite. They may be bigger, but she's usually faster.

At night, Zoey loves to stretch out on the couch and hang out with us while we watch tv, read, or do other relaxing things. She will go into her crate at around 10:30 at night and go to sleep, all by herself - it's a good hint to us to start packing it up for the night, also. If it's nice out, we'll all hang out on the back porch together.

She's really smart - she picked up basic commands pretty quickly (we're still fine-tuning, but the connection's there), and she can also high-five now. We're thinking of training her to be a therapy dog in the future, as that's something that's close to both our hearts.

Zoey is a great dog. We are lucky to have her, and she's brought so much into our lives. We both want to thank you for helping her get to us, and for all the work you continue to do. Zoey has changed our lives profoundly and in such a positive way. We couldn't imagine our lives without her, and we look forward to giving her a great home for the rest of her life.

Thanks!

Me: A Southern Belle. You: The Perfect Family. Are We a Match?

Hey, y'all!

It's Flo here, direct from my new home up North. I have come a long way to find what we girls all want. Yep, that's right, the C-word - COMMITMENT! I want a forever home, not someone looking for a little walk in the park.

Oh sure, the shelter staff was really nice to me, but they have lots of other dogs and lots of cats to take care of. We had some laughs, but I am ready for a forever kind of love. For us to have a successful future, you need to understand my likes and dislikes, my wants, my needs, my turn-ons, my turn-offs. So, it's time to meet me - Flo!

Sun sign: Leo

Physical attributes: Slim, (I could use a few extra pounds, which foster mommy is working on), very soft, pretty fur in many shades of brown, perky, silky ears, soulful eyes, adorable widow's peak. I am a bit cow-hocked in my rear legs, but it doesn't slow me down.

Hobbies: Movies, listening to music (jazz and country are faves), sampling new types of cuisine!

Personality: I am very curious about life outside the shelter and willing to try new experiences. I'm trusting, a little shy with men, but am getting awfully fond of my new foster daddy. I am very affectionate and will lean in to encourage more lovin'.

Likes: Being snuggled and cuddled, walks on nice soft grass, mealtimes, naps on the couch.

Dislikes: Jokes about "going with the Flo" - like I've never heard THAT one before! When people only see my cuteness, and don't appreciate my mind. I'm not just a pretty face!

Achievements so far: No potty accidents in the house, charming the neighbors.

So, take a chance on a sweet Southern gal. Remember the name - Flo! I think we could make beautiful music together.
